This is an excellent video, my mom is recovering dining room chairs and this provided some valuable information re tools needed and process itself, thank you!

as an upholsterer id give this video a 9 out of 10. id fold the corners a little different (not making the last cut he made) so that it doesnt pull out and reveal the cut

Thanks for this! I am considering trying my first upholstery job. This gives me a little more confidence.

does anybody get nervous about these “diy” videos for upholstery? i used to worry that i was losing business if people did everything themselves, but pretty soon i was getting people coming in who half way finished one seat and couldn’t handle it. it is nice because they realize how much work upholstery is and have more respect for your opinion and about how much the job is worth, so they are less likely to haggle when they come in.

i know exactly what you mean (being an upholsterer myself) everyone thinks its easy, and simple/quick to do, but its FAR FROM IT!

    Great information

  7. 6t5 Says:

  8. stradplayer614 Says:

yes and everyone asking for prices is an expert now. and thinks they can do everything

  9. doxiesupholstery Says:

    Great explaining!

  10. TheRattleSnake3145 Says:

Not a bad video, but that base could have easly been covered without any folds in the corners.

Also a good habit to get into is to put all of your marks on the back of the vinal/fabric so if you make a mistake and cant remove your marks, its not noticed.

  11. AceLockCo Says:

Yea’ I was wondering why he did the corners like that. I was actually watching the entire video to see how to do the corners and he totally did a crappy amateur job on them. Otherwise good info.

  12. thinkbig2 Says:

Ha ha hard case vid a better way is to tack your corners first then do the flats. then pull the corner tacks out and finish corners. i noticed he never turnd the job over to show “SURFS UP” i bet lol

“It’s helpful to use a 60-inch ruler (or at least a 48-inch one) in a *fart* framer’s square!!”

Seriously though, this was a good video that helped me understand the basics – although in the end I took my slip seats to a shop downtown to do them for me :)

I think this was a very good video, compared to others I’ve seen here, as for the cornners, common sense will tell you to kind of play with it and see which one works for you.

    i fell asleep watching

  18. kenvue2 Says:

Maybe I didn’t explain well enough about the corners. I cut out the extra fabric so that the corners are not higher than the rest of the seat. You don’t want to see daylight between the seat and and frame. You can also put welt cording around the seat which acts as a gasket and gives a more finished look. Seats with rounded corners can be done by laying in a couple of pleats. –Ken

    nice video, thanks for sharing

  22. rckrackedup Says:

you should pul the corner over not cut it and overlap them,,it would have looked better

  23. orangecat61 Says:

@rckrackedup is there a smoother way to do the corners? I have come across seats with rounded corners which have have no pleats in the corners but I cannot think how to achieve that look….
